JMIR Metascience and Research Integrity focuses on publishing metascience (also known as metaresearch or "research on research"), aiming to increase the quality and efficiency of research and advance the quality, transparency, and integrity of the scholarly publishing ecosystem. The journal addresses ethical challenges, best practices, and scientific integrity issues through metascience and evidence-based research standards.

The journal focuses on metascience applied across the entire scientific knowledge ecosystem — from discovery and development to generation and dissemination. Technology, including artificial intelligence and new data models, can act as accelerants and major influencers on metascience and scientific integrity. The journal aims to uphold the highest standards of scientific integrity and responsible conduct in research, particularly in eHealth, digital health, and medical informatics. However, JMIR Metascience and Research Integrity also considers work in broader scientific disciplines. The journal promotes trustworthiness in science.

JMIR Metascience and Research Integrity welcomes research that uses scientific methodology to study science itself, particularly focusing on:

Metaresearch, including publishing patterns, practices, and policies
Solutions and interventions, including research and analyses on new governance, policies, infrastructures, collaboratories, technology, and education to mitigate the impacts of integrity risks, scientific misconduct, or ethical breaches
Publication ethics and research integrity, including all aspects and perspectives on these issues in scholarly publishing
Emerging technologies, including ethical implications and influences of technologies such as artificial intelligence and new data models in research and publication
Post-publication integrity, including the roles of post-publication reviews and actions to support the integrity of the scientific record

The journal publishes original research, reviews, policy papers, balanced viewpoints, tutorials, and research integrity case reports, providing trustworthy and reliable resources for all who contribute to or are impacted by scholarly and scientific work.
